Nobody can criticize Hanke for his shot selection or shooting prowess, however. It’s early in his sophomore season, but last year Hanke shot an amazing 72 percent from the floor. If they continue to employ this strategy, Hanke’s field goal percentage will undoubtedly drop…though the team’s offensive efficiency will no doubt improve. The NCAA career field goal percentage leader is Steve Johnson from Oregon St. He shot 67.8 percent on his career. It’s a longshot for Hanke to end up that high when his career is over…but a comparison between his numbers and Johnson’s gives you an idea of just how impressive his shooting has been thus far.

If I could show how many Win Shares each member of the 2005 Cubs put up, and then compare that with the projected 2006 roster, I might actually have a somewhat rudimentary method of forecasting the number of wins we should all expect for this upcoming season. Essentially, Win Shares are the number of wins contributed by each player to his team. The total number of Win Shares for each player on a team’s roster will always equal the number of wins that team had for the season. So in the table I created, Total WS obviously equals Total Win Shares, and WSP is a Win Shares rate stat that shows each player’s contribution given his amount of playing time (thus equalizing guys like Neifi Perez and Ronny Cedeno). When trying to compare the 2005 and 2006 rosters, I ran into one snag – obviously more than 25 players played for the Cubs last year due to injury, trades, or call-ups. By doing this, the number of total Win Shares I came up with only equals 73 for 2005 rather than the 79 total wins they actually had. So, it works both ways, and I think the number of career years and off years will balance each other out. Also, some of the Win Shares results are artificially small because players didn’t play the whole season. Using our or – 6 wins from the replacement players, we’re looking at a Cubs team in 2006 with anywhere from 76 to 88 wins.

I am positively absolutely ashamed of myself, but just a while ago, the most evil selfish thought entered my mind: evacuees from New Orleans means Cajun or Creole food joints springing up everywhere. The thought first occurred to me when I stopped at the Reasor’s in Tahlequah to stock up on — well, on whatever. Then, I turn onto Highway 82 to go home and get behind another Louisiana car.And I suddenly remember the fabulous little Cajun butcher up at the little store down the road from me who makes gumbo — REAL gumbo — every Wednesday during the winter. And I found myself thinking the most evil thoughts, namely PLEASE LET THEM SETTLE RIGHT HERE AND OPEN CAJUN RESTAURANTS AND LITTLE SMOKY CREOLE JOINTS EVERYWHERE!!
